frequently asked questions
A Sacred Mourning works with grief, memory, and personal materials in ways that can feel deeply vulnerable, so this page is here to answer some of the practical questions that may come up before beginning a commission, visiting the studio, or sending ashes, hair, fur, or other inclusions.
If you are unsure about anything, you are always welcome to make contact before ordering or committing to a piece.
Memorial Gemstones
What are mourning gemstones?
Mourning gemstones are created memorial stones designed to hold ashes, hair, fur, dried flowers, soil, fabric, handwritten fragments, or other small sentimental materials within a clear, durable, jewel-like form. They can then be set into rings, pendants, reliquaries, or other bespoke pieces.
Are mourning gemstones the same as cremation diamonds?
No. A Sacred Mourning gemstones are not natural gemstones, diamonds, or lab-grown stones made from remains. They are created memorial stones containing visible personal material suspended within a conservation-grade medium. The value of the process is in its honesty, visibility, and connection to what is being held.
Why do you offer this process?
I offer mourning gemstones because I believe there is meaning in preserving something real and personally connected, rather than relying on vague or romanticised claims about remains being transformed into a gemstone. This process allows the material to remain present, visible, and part of the object itself.
Timeframes, Variation & Care
How long does a commission take?
Timeframes depend on the complexity of the piece, the materials being used, and whether custom design or casting is involved. As a general guide, most commissioned pieces may take 6–10 weeks from the time all materials, sizing, and design details are confirmed.
Why does it take time?
Each piece is made slowly and individually, and some processes cannot be rushed. Mourning gemstones require curing time, jewellery may need to be modelled, cast, finished, engraved, or set, and personal inclusions need to be handled with care throughout. The time taken is part of ensuring the piece is made properly and respectfully.
Will my piece look exactly like the examples?
No two pieces will ever be identical. Ashes, hair, fur, stones, finishes, and handmade settings all carry natural variation, and these differences are part of what makes each piece personal. Examples are offered as a guide to form and feeling, rather than an exact promise of replication.
What if there are small bubbles, movement, or imperfections?
Mourning gemstones and inclusion pieces are made carefully, but they are not machine-made objects. Tiny bubbles, movement within hair or ash, or slight variation in surface and setting may occur as part of the handmade process. I will always aim to create something considered, durable, and respectful.
What if I am nervous about sending personal materials?
That is completely understandable. These materials may be among the most precious things you have, and sending them into someone else’s care can feel vulnerable. If you are unsure, we can talk through the process first, or you may wait until it feels right. Nothing needs to be rushed.
Can I visit the studio before beginning?
Yes. You are welcome to visit during open hours, or arrange a time to discuss a personal commission. Sometimes seeing the work in person, asking questions, and sitting with the materials can help clarify what feels right.
Can I request something unusual?
Yes. A Sacred Mourning exists to support personal acts of honouring, so unusual or highly specific requests are welcome. Not every idea or material will be technically possible, but each enquiry will be approached with care, honesty, and respect.
Ordering & Contact
Should I order first or enquire first?
For ready-made ritual goods, candles, incense, and some simpler pieces, you can order directly through the store. For anything involving ashes, hair, fur, engraving, sizing, bespoke design, or personal inclusions, I recommend making contact first so we can confirm the best path before anything is purchased or sent.
How do I begin?
You can begin through the contact form, by email, or by visiting the studio. A simple message is enough. You do not need to have all the answers yet; the first step is just opening the conversation.
Ashes, Hair & Personal Inclusions
Can ashes be included in a piece?
Yes. Ashes can be included within mourning gemstones, reliquary pieces, or suitable bespoke designs. Only a small amount is usually required, and clear instructions will be provided before anything is sent. Please do not send all of the ashes you have.
How much ash is needed?
Most pieces require far less than people expect. Depending on the design, a small pinch or partial teaspoon is often enough. If a larger amount is needed, this will be discussed before the piece begins. Any unused ashes will be returned with care.
Can hair or fur be included?
Yes. Hair and fur can be included in some mourning gemstones, reliquary pieces, and bespoke works. A small pinch is usually enough, though the final appearance will depend on colour, texture, curl, fineness, and the amount supplied. Very light, white, grey, or fine hair may appear more subtle once set.
Can more than one person or animal be included?
In many cases, yes. Ashes, hair, fur, or other materials from more than one person or animal may be included, depending on the design. These should be packaged and labelled separately so each element can be handled clearly and respectfully.
What else can be included?
Depending on the piece, it may be possible to work with dried flowers, fabric, soil, handwritten fragments, paper, small threads, or other sentimental materials. Not every material will be technically suitable, but you are welcome to ask, and I will be honest about what can be safely and respectfully used.
How should I package personal materials?
Instructions will be provided before anything is sent. As a general guide, ashes should be placed in a small sealed bag or container, clearly labelled with your name and the name of the person or animal being honoured. Hair or fur is best wrapped in foil, tissue, or paper, then placed in a small labelled envelope or bag.
Will unused materials be returned?
Unused ashes will always be returned. For hair, fur, fabric, paper, or other small inclusions, this can be discussed before the piece begins. If returning unused material is important to you, please let me know before sending anything.
Commissions
How do commissions begin?
Each commission begins with a conversation. We will talk through the person or animal being honoured, the kind of piece you are drawn to, any materials or symbols you may wish to include, and what you hope the object may hold. You do not need to arrive with everything decided.
Do I need to know exactly what I want?
No. Many people begin with only a feeling, a material, a name, a memory, or a broad idea of what they would like to carry. Part of the process is helping that become clearer, whether through an existing design, a small adaptation, or something entirely bespoke.
What kinds of jewellery can be made?
Commissions may include mourning rings, memorial signets, reliquary pendants, earrings, keepsake pieces, ceremonial objects, or custom designs created from the ground up. Existing designs can often be personalised through metal choice, finish, engraving, gemstones, symbolism, ashes, hairwork, fur, fabric, handwritten fragments, or other meaningful details.
Can you create pieces for pets?
Yes. A Sacred Mourning is not limited to human remembrance. Pieces may also be created in honour of beloved animals and companion pets, using ashes, fur, collars, fabric, tags, or other small materials where appropriate.
Can faith, spiritual, or cultural symbolism be included?
Yes. Mourning and remembrance are held differently by different people, and commissions may include religious, spiritual, cultural, symbolic, or deeply personal references. The intention is not to impose a particular language of grief, but to create something that feels true to your experience and the one being honoured.
